At the awards ceremonies of the 1977 O aaaahu Perimeter relay, the concept for the inaugural Ironman Triathlon was launched. Representatives from both the Mid-Pacific Road Runners and Waikiki Swim Clubs, whose members debated for many years which competitors were qualified, runners or swimmers, were among the participants.
On that opportunity, American Navy Commander John Collins pointed out that a latest Sports Illustrated magazine report had proclaimed that the maximum "oxygen absorption" ever achieved by any competitor, Belgian cyclist Eddy Merckx, so that cyclists may have been more suitable than anyone.
